Alakazam was a Portland, Maine-based software service for 3D website building and hosting. Its platform allowed users to use pre-built virtual world templates, talk about the immersive web, 2D versus 3D, AV, VR, and WebXR.
Alakazam was an early attempt at a browser‑based social world with customizable avatars and lightweight 3D environments. Its cultural impact lies in proving that low‑barrier, no‑download virtual worlds could attract casual social audiences. It influenced later HTML5/WebGL social platforms by showing that frictionless entry was a key factor in community growth. Though niche, it contributed to the shift away from heavy client installs.
