BACKGROUND: After Director Julian Reyes spoke at AWE XR 2023 on Mapping Immersive Worlds, he noticed there wasn’t any community space to learn about these immersive technologies. As a longtime curator of art, events, XR experiences, and electronic music, he was inspired to co-create the Virtual Worlds Museum, alongside longtime friends, volunteers, and XR professionals.

Combined with our commitment to ethics and community-building, our mission is to educate, preserve the history of these technologies, and bring like-minded organizations together. Our vision is to collaborate on a grand scale: we want to invite developers, platforms, standards organizations, companies, and our community to help us curate and build this collective project.
The “Metaverse” has been a term since 1992. More recently the concept has become mislabeled, overused, and misconstrued.
We strive to help bring clarity amidst the variances and confusion around this nomenclature and technology.
