OpenLife Grid

The OpenLife Grid was a community virtual world developed by 3DX. It was founded in November 2007 by Australian Steve Sima, president of 3DX. The OpenLife grid functionality was similar to that of Second Life, also using the WindLight graphics system.

History and Culture

OpenLife Grid was one of the earliest large‑scale OpenSim‑based alternatives to Second Life, proving that open‑source virtual worlds could sustain real communities. It influenced the rise of decentralized grids and user‑hosted metaverse ecosystems. The platform helped normalize the idea that virtual worlds didn’t need to be controlled by a single corporation. OpenLife contributed to the broader movement toward open, interoperable virtual environments.
