Rec Room is a free-to-play, cross-platform action and social VR game where players build and play games together. Released in 2016 by Rec Room Inc., it supported VR and non-VR play, allowing exploration of millions of player-created rooms, character customization, and creation of worlds using their Maker Pen tool. It emphasized community interaction, creativity, and online multiplayer experiences.

History and Culture

Rec Room proved that a tiny, whimsical VR hobby project could evolve into a global creative community where millions of people—kids, teens, adults—built worlds together instead of just consuming them. It also helped normalize cross‑platform interactive and social play, showing the industry that VR, console, mobile, and PC players could share the same space without hierarchy. They cultivated a culture of kindness, creativity, and low‑pressure social connection that made it a first “digital home” for an entire generation of young creators.
