Solipsis is a free and open-source system for a massively multi-participant shared virtual world designed by Joaquin Keller and Gwendal Simon at France Télécom Research and Development Labs. It aims to provide the infrastructure for a metaverse-like public virtual territory. Relying on a peer-to-peer architecture, the virtual world may potentially be inhabited by a theoretically unlimited number of participants.

History and Culture

Solipsis was one of the earliest attempts at a fully decentralized virtual world, exploring peer‑to‑peer networking for shared 3D spaces. Its cultural impact lies in pioneering concepts that would later reappear in Web3 metaverse discourse. The project challenged the assumption that virtual worlds must rely on centralized servers. Solipsis helped seed the idea of user‑controlled, distributed metaverse architectures.
